The first thing you need to get in order when looking for a replacement Skil cordless drill battery is to figure out the voltage of your drill. As the owner of your own power tool, you should know this pertinent piece of information. But just in case you forgot, figuring out the voltage is as easy as looking on the battery itself. Almost all batteries for T-handle and pistol grip-handle drills are located on the bottommost part of the handle—the part that touches the surface when you put it down upright.
Voltages come in a number of varieties and usually, the bigger the voltage, the bigger the battery pack. Also, for the smaller voltages like 3.6 volts and 7.2 volts, these are usually the batteries that are hidden from plain sight, usually in the handle itself.
The different battery voltages used by Skil in their cordless drills are as follows: 3.6 volts, 7.2 volts, 9.6 volts, 10.8 volts, 12 volts, 14.4 volts, 18 volts, and 24 volts.
The next important thing to figure out is the model number of your cordless drill. Skil has been making cordless drills for a number of years now, and they have released literally hundreds of models of drills. Luckily, Skil names their tools in a very unique and specific way. The models usually start with four digits, for example, “2260”. It would usually be followed by a dash and two more digits, and sometimes another dash is followed by two letters. For example (respectively): “2260-01”, “2362-01-RT”.
To find a proper replacement battery, you only need to know the first four digits.
When you get to browsing the catalog of available batteries, you will come across the terms “mAh” and “Ni-Cd” or “Ni-Mh”. The first term, “mAh” stands for ampere-hour or amp-hour. Simply put, a 2000 mAh battery has more capacity than a 1500 mAh battery. The formula and how that relates to your battery’s actual performance is a little more complex, but for the sake of simplicity, just keep in mind how it relates to capacity.
“Ni-Cd” and “Ni-Mh” means nickel-cadmium and nickel-metal hydride respectively. I’m sure you’ve come across these terms before, especially from your mobile phone’s batteries. These are just names they use to identify the type of cell a battery uses. Simply put, Ni-Mh batteries have almost double the capacity of Ni-Cd batteries, so the higher mAh numbers are usually associated with Ni-Mh. The voltage, whether it be for a Ni-Cd or a Ni-Mh with whatever capacity, stays the same.
